This was a celebration
in story, music and dance of the world famous street market and
the renowned ballroom which together share the same name ... The
Barrowland!
Through the
eyes of three generations of Glasgow women, it told of the birth
of the market place and its development from a single market stall
to a centre of street commerce, a city landmark and the hub of
life for the ordinary Glaswegian.
Also recounted
the history of the ballroom which began life as a venue for the
market traders but soon developed, under resident band Billy
McGregor and the Gaybirds, into one of Britain's most famous dance
halls and home to generations of the city's revellers.
'Burlin' Roon
the Barrowland' took you by 'caur down memory lane where you could
stop off for a bacon roll and a sheet of ham ribs at the
City Ham and Egg Store, and met again the great characters who
frequented the Barras.
